A quick video tutorial from Steve & Lisa McBride on how to make your own sea salt here in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s way easier than you’d think. Written instructions below too. Enjoy!
Step 1: Collect sea water from a clean source.
Step 2: Strain the water through a colander into a stock pot, to remove any debris.
Step 3: Boil the salt water down about 50%. This will take several hours. Eventually it will look cloudy and soupy with some salt crystals forming.
Step 4: Transfer the salt water to a large flat dish, like a baking sheet or brownie pan.
Step 5: Place the pan of salt water into a warm spot so the remaining liquid can evaporate off. A sunny, warm spot outdoors or a furnace room indoors will both work well. Cover the pan with a screen outdoors to keep insects and debris out while the salt dries. It may take a few days for all the liquid to evaporate.
Step 6: Once the liquid evaporates off, you’re left with chunks of crumbly sea salt. Run that through a salt mill to make it more finely ground.
Delicious!
