Our Heritage, Our Future: A Celebration of Newfoundland & Labrador’s Food Capacity
Root Cellars Rock! is a provincial project hosted by the Food Security Network of Newfoundland & Labrador (FSN). Root Cellars Rock! aims to stimulate healthy local food consumption and production across the province by celebrating Newfoundland & Labrador’s agricultural heritage and stimulating growth in agriculture and local food self-sufficiency; through citizens, community groups, and agricultural producers.
Why Root Cellars? Root cellars are being used as a symbol of Newfoundland & Labrador’s unique agricultural heritage and current potential for increased food self-sufficiency, to highlight our provincial capacity and to stimulate growth for the future!
Objectives of Root Cellars Rock!
1. Celebrate the heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador food capacity
2. Support local producers
3. Enhance individual awareness and build community capacity
4. Build provincial awareness through knowledge transfer
The Four P’s of Local Food
Root Cellars Rock! is focused around the Four P’s of Local Food, coined by and in memory of local organic farmer, community animator and environmentalist, Neil Tilley. The Four P’s resources are meant to encourage people to engage in activities that foster the local food system in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Planting- How to grow food.
Picking- How to harvest and gather food.
Preparing- How to make healthy meals.
Preserving- How to preserve and store food.
Current Activities of Root Cellars Rock!
The Root Cellars Rock! Blog is a space for sharing knowledge about local food, through discussion, access to learning resources, and via blog posts from across the province. Your participation on the blog is welcomed! Post comments, explore the blog and contact info@rootcellarsrock.ca if you would like to contribute resources or volunteer as a writer, no experience necessary.
The Root Cellars Rock! Advisory Committee is a group of volunteers who are passionate about the local food system. They meet monthly to brainstorm and plan for upcoming activities and new members are welcome, contact info@rootcellarsrock.ca
The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map is a resource that was created to connect Avalon consumers to their local area farmers. Root Cellars Rock! is proud to have sat on the committee for the map with the hopes of fostering the development of this resource and similar resources for across the province.
The 4 P’s of Local Food Workshops are a series of tools that Root Cellars Rock! is developing. Representatives from community groups across the province are contributing their ideas about how to share local food knowledge in the form of workshops at community gardens, farmers’ markets, community kitchens, family resource centres, and other venues that foster healthy and sustainable food practices. If you’re a part of a community organization in Newfoundland and Labrador that is interested in offering local food workshops, email info@rootcellarsrock.ca to find out more. This project is funded through a Provincial Wellness Grant and a Job Creation Partnership.
