A Celebration of Newfoundland & Labrador’s Food Capacity

Root Cellars Rock! is a provincial grow local campaign hosted by the Food Security Network of Newfoundland & Labrador (FSN). Root Cellars Rock! is aimed to stimulate healthy local food consumption across the province by celebrating Newfoundland & Labrador’s agricultural heritage and stimulating growth in agriculture; through citizens, community groups, and agricultural producers.

Why Root Cellars?

Root Cellars are being used as a symbol of Newfoundland & Labrador’s agricultural heritage and current capacity for food self-sufficiency. This symbol is meant to act as a vehicle for the overarching message of the campaign – to highlight our provincial food production capacity and to stimulate growth for the future!

Objectives of Root Cellars Rock!

  1. Highlight Newfoundland & Labrador’s capacity to grow & store food, and stimulate growth in Newfoundland & Labrador agriculture;
  2. Educate communities on food security issues including the importance of local, sustainable food systems;
  3. Educate citizens & stimulate community engagement in the local food system – including; planting, picking, preparing & preserving food; and
  4. Develop and facilitate networking strategies between farmers and consumers. and to stimulate growth for the future!

Root Cellars Rock! Blog

The Root Cellars Rock! Blog will act as a virtual community space for sharing knowledge about local food, both by online interactive discussion, and via reading keynote blog posts from agricultural experts across the province.

The Four P’s of Local Food: In Memory of Neil Tilley

Root Cellars Rock! is focused around the four P’s of local food: Planting, Picking, Preparing & Preserving, in memory of local organic farmer and environmentalist, Neil Tilley. The P’s are meant to encourage you to engage in an interactive online discussion regarding your experience with any and all of the P’s – talk about everything from what grows best in your garden, to where your favourite raspberry patch is, to your best turnip recipe!
