Season update!

How are people's gardens coming along? Is this summer's record sunshine treating your veggies, fruit and herbs well?

So far it been an awesome growing season – had to nip off a 7ft tomato plant that had reached the greenhouse roof! An odd aphid or two but have barely seen a slug this year! I do have some winter moths in my apple tree and losing my spinach to leafminers but I have oodles and oodles of lettuce, tomatoes are fruiting and peppers are flowering like mad! Cucumbers are looking rather healthy no flowers yet! I'd post some pics but I have no idea how!

To post a picture or pictures in the forum, it needs to already be online somewhere else. There's no way to just upload a new picture to this forum.

Click on the 'Image' button (second from the right, above the box where you type your post). Two image 'tags' appear (the letters img surronded by square brackets). copy and paste a link to your image between the two img tags.

Alternatively, you could just post a link to an album on Facebook, or Flickr, etc.

As you can see my garlic is doing well and has lots of scapes! I should cut them soon.

My garden is doing pretty good. We've had some adventures and misadventures. I harvested this turnip last week to see how they were coming along and boy was I surprised, it weighed 4 lbs and we still have plenty of growing time left.

My garden is doing great except for my onions for some reason.I had almost 100 onions planted and got just a few that are of usable size. I kept it watered ,weeded and fertilized. My garden plot is not huge (22×28) but I always make sure to rotate where I grow everything so that each veggie is not grown in the same spot year to year. So, I'm not sure why that happened.

Otherwise, everything is doing really well.

Just found this in the book Ask Ross Traverse About Gardening that might help you out in future with the onions(p. 170):

"The onion bulb develops when the days begin to shorten in late summer. It is important to feed onions on a regular basis with a soluble fertilizer like 20-20-20 or 20-8-20 every two weeks until the end of August. It is not a good idea to apply fertilizer in the fall because a lot of the nutrients, like nitrogen, will be leached out of the soil and will not benefit the onions that are planted the following spring."
