Garden Pests
on: July 26, 2012, 18:32

These pests are barbarizing my parsnip plants (the ones i'm growing for seed.) Can you tell me what I can use to get rid of them? Please visit my blog for pictures of the plant damage.

I think you have two different species. The green one is probably a short tailed swallow tail, known to feed on parsnips and carrots. I'm not sure what the other ones are.

If you only have a small area, "hand picking" is probably the most environmentally friendly and effective way to control caterpillars. I don't know a lot about caterpillars in Newfoundland, but I do know that toxic ones do exist in this world, so gloves should probably be worn. I usually just pick them off the leaves and drop them in a bucket of soapy water.

The bacteria Bt can also be sprayed on. You can buy it at most nurseries and big box stores. This kills all caterpillars that feed on it. It will have to be reapplied if it rains.

Here is good site I found that summarizes how to control caterpillars:

I only saw two of the green ones, but the small grey grubs are very numerous. Almost everyday I would find new ones. These parsnip plants are a magnet for flies and insects. I'll be lucky if they survive long enough for me to get seed from them. I've grown parsnips and carrots for years but this is the first time i've seen these pests around. I haven't used BT before but i'll check around to see where I can buy it. I'll check out the website as well. Thanks for the reply.

This one was on the plants for a few days before the grubs appeared.
