White cosmos, nowhere near the worm tree
Hello, friends! I had wanted to do a lovely pictorial of all the things growing happily in my garden today, but unfortunately almost everything in the back yard is completely covered in specks of black poo from the millions of tiny worms rolled up in the leaves of my neighbours’ enormously large maple tree, the branches of which now reach almost 2/3 of the way across my back yard. Recent studies have found elevated lead levels in St. John’s soil, particularly in the downtown area. This is a common issue for older cities, due to the past use of lead paint, leaded gasoline and the burning of coal. Lead exposure above certain levels can have potentially harmful health effects, especially for young children. Soil can be tested easily and cheaply for lead and other toxins. [...]

Hello everyone
My name is Rick Kelly and I’ll be your amateur gardener this year! I’m going to be making posts all season about my backyard garden. This is actually my second year gardening… but last year my whole harvest amounted to about 5 salads and one meal of miniature root veggies. So I’m really hoping to do better this year!
This year I’m armed with knowledge from some workshops organized by FEASt (Food Education Action St. John’s), a lot of advice from friends, and hopefully some advice from you! This can be a space for commenting on any issues facing first time gardeners, or about what I’m doing specifically.
